Ghosts of Consumption (for Piet M.)

Artist: Pam Longobardi
Title: Ghosts of Consumption
Media: Plastic found in the ocean (Hawaii, Alaska, Greece, Italy, and Gulf of Mexico)
Dimensions: 110” x 75” x 8"
Date: 2011

Info: Pam Longobardi currently lives in Atlanta, Georgia and has created the Drifters Project in 2006, addressing global plastic pollution and the changing ocean.

Statement: Plastic, to me, is the physical marker of the Anthropocene, the new geologic era of the planet Earth that we are now embarking on. I was born into and grew up in the age of plastic; it was part of modernity, and it will become the new geologic layers, so every piece of plastic is a ‘future fossil.’

Background Info: This work is homage to the simplified beauty of Mondrian’s abstract drawings from his Ocean/Pier series while updating the abstract composition such that the marks are actual plastic objects that have floated over ocean currents. The objects are presented as specimens on steel pins in the wall. 287 pieces of ocean-borne plastic create the image.

Theme: This piece by Pam Longobardi connects to the theme of "Recycle 2.0" because it is made from forgotten pieces that were found in the ocean.
